I am Marcus Hawk. I’m 15 and a 9th-grade student attending East High School in Anchorage. On Feb. 14, at 11:18 a.m., there was a mass shooting in Florida, and there were many unfortunate deaths and injuries to innocent civilians.
In our state, residents are able to purchase a wide variety of firearms. We are Alaskans; many of us depend upon hunting to fill our refrigerators with meat. More importantly, we are Americans, and we demand safety in our streets so that we can play and be children. Data shows 146 mass shootings between 1967 and 2017 in the U.S., with an average of eight people dead, including the perpetrator. A plan to diminish gun violence is to limit firearms to pistols and hunting rifles.
