It has been reliably reported in the ADN that Mayor Mark Berkowitz intends to impose an alcohol tax upon Anchorage residents to provide shelter and food for derelict street dwellers.
Are he and the Anchorage Assembly aware of that excellent California prison system called Alcatraz from which no one ever escaped?
Consider such an idea for Anchorage derelicts. There are many large, vacant islands in Alaska where such a prison-type accommodation could be built. Why not even construct such an island in the center of Cook Inlet? It would need to be big enough for them to grow their own food, as otherwise they would simply starve to death. Without small boats, escape would be impossible, due to sinking into the sludge.
